Meaning a small-scale, decentralized manufacturing business often operated out of a home rather than a purpose-built facility. Cottage industry use to be ubiquitous, but now you travel across countries and it's shopping mall after mall with the same paint by numbers chain stores. I could get political as to why that is but will spare you that here. The good news is jobs are moving to be more work-from-home based and a ripple effect of that is cottage industry will never die out! It will instead only return greater than ever because it's our natural way.
